1895 - The 1st automobile race was held. It took place over 52 miles of snowy roads from Chicago to Waukegan, Illinois. The winner was James Franklin Duryea, who won $2,000. It took him 7 hours and 53 minutes to complete the round-trip. His average speed was seven mph.



1925 - The Grand Ole Opry made its radio debut.

1948 - The very first Polaroid cameras, invented by Edwin H. Land, went on sale.

1974 - Elton Johnconvinced John Lennon to perform on-stage for the first time in years. John promised Elton that he'd appear if their duet, "Whatever Gets You Thru the Night", hit #1, which it did. The show turned out to be John Lennon's last concert appearance.
1994 - Jeffrey Dahmer was clubbed to death by a fellow inmate while cleaning a prison toilet.

1995 - President Clinton signed a $6 billion road bill that ended the 55 mpf speed limit.
